Research Supports Relevance

When learning connects, students can thrive.

A Stanford study of 1,405 ninth graders found that students encouraged to take a culturally relevant ethnic studies course increased attendance by 21 percentage points. Researchers also found gains in GPA and credits earned.

The findings came from a well-implemented San Francisco program serving students near an enrollment threshold and should not be interpreted as a guarantee of identical results in every school.

Hands-On Science & Discovery

Science is meant to be investigated.

At Village Academy, students don't simply memorize scientific concepts—they observe, question, investigate and discover.

Through hands-on laboratory experiences such as animal dissection, students examine anatomy firsthand and make connections between organs, body systems, structure and function. Students practice careful observation, scientific vocabulary, evidence gathering and drawing conclusions from what they discover.

“I learned about it” becomes “I investigated it myself.”
